What in the hell? Am I really listening to this and actually liking it? Sometimes I surprise myself. I've never been a huge country fan. Most likely because I grew up in the 90's with my parents listening to Alan Jackson and Reba McEntire. I was scarred for life. When I got a little older, I grew to appreciate Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Hank Williams and, of course, southern rock bands from the 1970's. I mean, really, who doesn't love Sweet Home Alabama?
Then, I moved to Texas. Texas country is huge with artists like Robert Earl Keen and Jerry Jeff Walker. In Austin, Texas country artists can be found playing every night of the week. Not my scene. Not at all. Now, play me something on a banjo and you will have me swooning, but I am not a Texas country gal.
Now, enter Sturgill Simpson. It was not supposed to be this way. I was not supposed to fall in love with this song, or this music in general. I first heard "Turtles All The Way Down" and thought it was ok. It didn't knock me out of breath the first time I heard it. What I did like about it was that it had that country twang, but it has some psychedelic elements as well. If you don't know me, you should know I am a big fan of music from the late 1960's. Them randomly on the radio, I heard "Life of Sin." Ok, well this is a fun song! Sturgill seems to have a dark side and I like it! My love affair with Mr. Simpson is in full swing.
