Sex is Cheap

What in the hell?  Am I really listening to this and actually liking it?  Sometimes I surprise myself.  I've never been a huge country fan.  Most likely because I grew up in the 90's with my parents listening to Alan Jackson and Reba McEntire.  I was scarred for life.  When I got a little older, I grew to appreciate Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Hank Williams and, of course, southern rock bands from the 1970's.  I mean, really, who doesn't love Sweet Home Alabama?

Then, I moved to Texas.  Texas country is huge with artists like Robert Earl Keen and Jerry Jeff Walker.  In Austin, Texas country artists can be found playing every night of the week.  Not my scene.  Not at all.  Now, play me something on a banjo and you will have me swooning, but I am not a Texas country gal.

Now, enter Sturgill Simpson.  It was not supposed to be this way.  I was not supposed to fall in love with this song, or this music in general.  I first heard "Turtles All The Way Down" and thought it was ok.  It didn't knock me out of breath the first time I heard it.  What I did like about it was that it had that country twang, but it has some psychedelic elements as well.  If you don't know me, you should know I am a big fan of music from the late 1960's.  Them randomly on the radio, I heard "Life of Sin."  Ok, well this is a fun song!  Sturgill seems to have a dark side and I like it!  My love affair with Mr. Simpson is in full swing.

Dead Bodies

The Virgin Suicides is one of my favorite films.  It's completely haunting and stuck with me for a while after I watched it for the first time.  The film score is also very good, if you are into that sort of thing.  Some of my favorite tracks include Playground Love (with vocals), Clouds Up, Dirty Trip, and the video listed: Suicide Underground.  Happy haunting today!

You Can Call Me Nancy

FJM's new album is out tomorrow and thanks to Vinyl Me, Please, I will be getting it on vinyl this week.  I have quite the vinyl collection these days and find myself buying more and more, at least the albums that I find truly special.

Vinyl Me, Please also has some secret shows planned this year for members.  One can only hope they make Austin one of the locations.  We shall see.

You Had Me Worried

Well this song just won't get out of my head...sometimes song endings surprise you!

In a dream, I saw you walkin'
Like a kid alive and talkin', that was you
In the classroom, you were teachin'
On the streets you were policin' that was you

To the one I now know most
I will tell them of your ghost like a thing that never, ever was

And all that ever mattered
Will some day turn back to batter like a joke
Behind thin walls, you hid your feelings
Takes four legs to make a ceilin' like a thing

In a dream I saw you walkin'
With your friends alive and talkin', that was you
Well I saw it in your movements
And even though you never knew it, well I knew

Just how sweet it could be
If you'd never left these streets

You had me worried, so worried that this would last
You had me worried, so worried that this would last
But now I'm learning, learning that this will pass
But now I'm learning, learning that this will pass

A Moveable Feast

If you were to ever look inside my collection of books, you will see many passages highlighted or underlined.  Some words and sentences sing to me.  Winter is here.  Don't these quotes warm you up?

"Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire:  it is the time for home."  Edith Sitwell

“My old grandmother always used to say, summer friends will melt away like summer snows, but winter friends are friends forever.”  George R. R. Martin

“Surely everyone is aware of the divine pleasures which attend a wintry fireside; candles at four o'clock, warm hearthrugs, tea, a fair tea-maker, shutters closed, curtains flowing in ample draperies to the floor, whilst the wind and rain are raging audibly without.”   Thomas de Quincey

“We ate well and cheaply and drank well and cheaply and slept well and warm together and loved each other.”  Ernest Hemingway

Friday On My Mind

Is there anybody out there?

I'm listening to the latest album by The Budos Band, Burnt Offerings.  I'm tapping my toes to the beats and enjoying the first three tracks immensley, especially "Into the Fog."

I also can't get "Gangsta" by Tune-Yards out of my head.  "What's a girl to do if she'll never be a rasta?  Singing from her heart, but she'll never be a rasta."

I will leave you with an oldie but a goodie...Happy Friday everyone!
